I’m going to let you in on a little secret that you may not know…There is a universal law God created that everyone including HIM has to obey.
Here it is…you have to GIVE before you GET.
I’m not talking about the things you should be graciously giving in the process of helping others (although depending on your definiteness of purpose this might also be true– more to come on that next week). I am talking about the foundational price you are willing to pay for even the opportunity of success in your own personal goals.
Really THINK for a minute about one of the cornerstone scriptures of faith “For God so loved the world, He GAVE His only begotten son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16
God had to GIVE first of His son (and with it pay what is the ultimate price) for the ongoing opportunity to try and capture our eternal hearts.
I remember back to almost two and a half years ago when I had the burning desire to go out and inspire people past just the physical form of yoga. At the time, many of you now know, I still owned two yoga studios.
Yoga was what was for me both comfortable and known. And to be honest, with so many years spent on the mat both in personal practice and through the art of teaching I had become pretty good.
I would wake up each morning and live out both a passion and a purpose to help others discover for themselves what some thought was impossible- strength in their bodies and peace in their minds.
The only problem was that I had begun to sense a huge unrealized potential for myself and with it an extraordinary level of yet earned success I wasn’t even sure I had what it took to achieve. And so even within what I knew as both a great passion and valuable skillset I began to feel unfulfilled.
And with that gradual discontentment accompanied an even greater presence of possibility that maybe I was simply being called to be, do and share something more.
But here was the rub… and this was a truth for me then just as much as it continues to be for me (and by the way you) now…you can’t get something for nothing.
And the greater the call/the dream/the goal you have the greater the price you must be willing to pay. So even though I had it GOOD I had to be willing to sacrifice (GIVE) in the unproven hope for GETTING something GREAT.
I had to (in essence) give up all that I knew in order to receive even the possibility of what I wanted.
I had to release the grip on what I had in order to open my hand to the opportunity of what I was asking for…
In very practical terms I had to “let go” of the studios and GIVE — Give energy and money into personal growth, give time into developing content, give over my fear of failing and others criticism, let go of my excuses aka “reasons” I wasn’t doing more…and in giving, create the free space to receive (aka do, have and BE) something MORE!
If you’re like me and you’ve been at the crossroads of where you are versus where you want to go, you’ll wish the law worked different. Trust me I wish we could hold onto the things we know and play it safe.
And let’s be honest, sometimes we try to because it never feels comfortable to be untethered, even when what we are holding onto is really just holding us back…
And then we see what we think are the “lucky” ones that maybe get a touch of the hand to the other side of the ledge without letting go of the first. But even here the law still holds true…Imagine someone (maybe you) stuck between two ledges with a death grip on both sides and feeling stretched to capacity while they (you) stay stranded and stuck.
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve God and be enslaved to money” Matthew 6:24 NLT
No matter where you are, you can only reach the other side of where you want to go by FIRST letting go of where you DO NOT want to stay.
Here’s some simple examples::
If you want to get physically strong you may have to give up time sitting on the couch to make room for the gym.
If you want to nourish a new relationship you may have to give up some time alone by yourself.
If you want to spend your morning in visualization and meditation (because you know that’s how to ramp up your desire), you may need to give up scrolling on your phone in the abyss of social media.
BOTTOM LINE: IF you want to reach your dreams you have to give up every excuse you’ve created to not reach them.
You (and you alone) must decide whether or not the reward for which you are striving towards is worth the price you must pay.
And that price of time, talents and treasure is always paid in the disciplines and persistence needed to reach your desired goals.
Now before you freak out and fixate on what you have to “give up”, focus instead on what you “get”…the good thing about universal laws is once you align yourself with them, and make them work for you in the positive, ANYTHING you want is possible.
So hold the vision of what you want most thus creating a burning desire in wanting to get there, think about the things that are getting in your way and be willing to give those things up THEN and most importantly begin acting believably in faith on a plan to pursue your dreams.
Be willing to give of yourself in whatever form is necessary and pay the price of persistence BECAUSE YOU KNOW your dreams are WORTH IT– and this is always a necessary step to see it through.
In the comments below no matter how BIG or small, let’s help to inspire one another, and share your decision right now on what you are willing to give and write out a two-part statement of faith.
I am willing to GIVE ________________ so I can begin to GET ____________. (fill in the blank with whatever you want most).
